The twenty-four Chinese solar terms represent the twenty-four different positions of the Earth in its orbit. As it takes days for the earth to circle the sun, there is only one festival every fifteen days, and each festival represents a different change in climate, weather and time of year. The dates of the beginning of the 24 solar terms remain almost the same year after year in the solar calendar, differing by a day or two at most, precisely because the solar terms, like the solar calendar, are based on the Earth's revolution around the Sun in a year.

      二十四节气以地球围绕太阳公转的一个周期作为一个轮回，基本概括了一年中不同时节太阳在黄道上位置的不同、寒来暑往的准确时间、降雨降雪等自然现象发生的规律，以及记载了大自然中一些物候现象的时刻。

The names and meanings of the 24 seasonal division points are:

• the Beginning of Spring 立春

• the Beginning of Summer 立夏

• the Beginning of Autumn 立秋

• the Beginning of Winter 立冬

They mark the start of four seasons. 它们表示四季的开始。

· the Vernal Equinox 春分

· the Autumnal Equinox 秋分

They are the two points where the day and night are equal. 春分、秋分是一年中昼夜一样长的两天。

· the Summer Solstice 夏至

It has the longest day and shortest night in a year. 夏至是一年中白天最长、黑夜最短的一天。

· the Winter Solstice 冬至

It has the longest night and shortest day in a year. 冬至是一年中黑夜最长、白天最短的一天。

· the Rain Water 雨水

It means the start of the spring rains. 开始下春雨的意思。

· the Waking of Insects 惊蛰

It indicates that the spring thunder awakens hibernating insects. 表示春雷响过以后，冬眠的昆虫被惊醒了。

· the Pure Brightness 清明

It means the onset of spring when a bright and clean spring scene replaces the cold, withered and yellow scene of winter. 是说春天到了，明净的春色代替了冬季寒冷枯黄的景象。

· the Grain Rain 谷雨

It indicates that from that day, there will be more rainfall, which is beneficial to the growth of crops. 表示从此雨水增多，对庄稼的生长很有好处。

· the Grain Budding 小满

It shows that crops that will ripen in summer start to show plump seeds. 表示在夏季成熟的农作物籽粒开始饱满。

· the Grain in Ear 芒种

It tells people that the wheat has ripened. 告诉人们小麦已经成熟了。

· the Slight Heat 小暑

· the Great Heat 大暑

They indicate the full onset of summer, with the Great Heat being the hottest day of the year. 表示天气炎热的程度，大暑是一年中最热的时候。

· the Limit of Heat 处暑

It shows that scorching summer days will soon be gone. 表示炎热的天气快要结束了。

· the White Dew 白露

It tells people that the weather is turning cold. 告诉人们天就要冷了。

· the Cold Dew 寒露

As this intensifies, we move on to the Cold Dew. 当天寒加剧，就到了寒露。

· the Frost's Descent 霜降

It means the appearance of the first frost of the season. 开始下霜的意思。

· the Slight Snow 小雪

· the Great Snow 大雪

They mean the arrival of the snowy season. 表示到了下雪的时节。（“小”和“大”意味着雪量大小的差别）

· the Slight Cold 小寒

· the Great Cold 大寒

They indicate the degree of coldness in winter, with the Great Cold being the coldest day of the season. 表示冬天寒冷的程度，大寒是一年中最冷的时候。
